Here’s the sleep news for this week:

Good Sleep Continuity Leads to Better Days for People with Dementia

A new study by Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Surrey, and University of Sussex shows that nightly sleep can be an indicator of the severity of daytime symptoms for people with dementia. After two weeks of studying patients’ sleep habits and corresponding daytime cognition and dementia symptoms, researchers concluded in a preliminary study that sleep continuity was the predictive element to how the subjects would engage the next day. The study found that better sleep continuity, which is the ability to stay asleep after initially falling asleep, led to increased alertness and fewer memory impairments.

Sleep Linked to Protection Against Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

A new study of the data of 110,000 people from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, published in the Annals of Hepatology, found that getting seven hours of sleep helps alleviate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NFLD). Though further research is needed to prove causality, the study supports the benefits of sleep in management of chronic illnesses including NFLD. Researchers found that poor sleep affects several pathophysiological processes related to NFLD, but catch-up sleep on weekends can help lower risks.

Pet owners can now sleep in giant dog beds

Has studying your dog’s sleeping habits left you curious about his bed? Now may be your chance to experience the feeling firsthand. A pair of university students from Vancouver, Canada, has launched a line of human-sized pet beds. The bed, which fits anyone 6 foot 5 inches or under, aims to soothe those with ADHD, stress, and anxiety, as well as perhaps boost productivity by encouraging users to reap the benefits of napping. After raising over $290,000 on Kickstarter, they hope to start production and fulfillment later this year.

Are you looking for a more immersive white noise sleep experience? Look no further! Wonder Bee & Bee in Grottle, Italy, is celebrating International Bee Day by offering a night sleeping with one million bees. The rental space includes one room with two single beds beneath a suspended hive where you can see and hear the buzzing bees. This Airbnb — or Air ‘bee and bee’ — which is located in the middle of an olive garden, includes lessons from the owner on bees and how to live with them, and proceeds benefit bee conservation projects.
