Here’s the sleep news for this week:
No AC, no problem
Ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, construction is underway, including the Olympic Village, where the competitors will live and sleep. Despite summer temperatures recently reaching over 100 degrees in France, the accommodations won't include AC. This decision was made to help cut down on the carbon footprint of the games. Laurent Michaud, director of the Olympic and Paralympic Villages for Paris 2024, maintains that athletes will sleep comfortably despite the lack of central air, because "with the insulation of the buildings, we can contain the coolness of the night until late the next day, and that helps keep an acceptable temperature inside." If Paris 2024 participants or organizers are looking for any recommendations on how to sleep cool, we’ve got them covered.
Severe obstructive sleep apnea heightens risk for various hospitalizations
Severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) raises the risk for hospital admittance with pneumonia and any infections compared with individuals who have normal breathing during sleep, according to results published in CHEST. In a prospective cohort study, researchers analyzed 1,586 individuals from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study to see if there is a relationship between OSA and risk for hospitalization with pneumonia, respiratory infections, or any infections. Though there is increased risk for severe OSA, the risk for hospital admittance with pneumonia did not differ between patients with mild or moderate OSA and patients with normal breathing during sleep.

It’s a tale a lot of us are all too familiar with nowadays: Your flight gets cancelled or delayed for hours and you think you may have to spend a night in the airport. That’s exactly what happened to actors Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard on Wednesday. The couple said their family’s flight was delayed, and there were no hotels available for 50 miles. Ultimately, the couple and their two children bought pillows and blankets in order to sleep in the airport, but they were kicked out of the airport and told to find somewhere else to sleep. Luckily, friends of friends took them in, and they resumed their travels the next day.
